Several U.S. senators, including Alabama’s Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville, asked to extend public comment on the Biden administration's Title IX proposal by a minimum of 30 days.
Several parents and grandparents criticized the proposed rule for infringing upon religious freedoms or making sports unfair. Various teachers also provided comments, with some opposing the rule and others claiming it was long overdue.“I am a teacher at an inclusive public charter school in Alabama that specifically designates a space for LGBTQIA+ students in our mission statement.
Changing the definition would prohibit “harassment based on sex stereotypes, sex characteristics, pregnancy or related conditions, sexual orientation, and gender identity,” as well as “unwelcome conduct on the basis of sex,” the rule read. However, the statement drew attention to various sections regarding sex-separated living areas and potential harm to transgender students, saying that the proposed rule did not use explicit language and could subsequently open the door to manipulation.
