The test missile “was not able to complete its launch sequence” due to an unspecified issue it encountered on the aircraft, according to a statement the service published Wednesday.
WASHINGTON - A Tuesday test mission over the military’s Point Mugu Sea Range near Los Angeles was supposed to demonstrate the U.S. Air Force’s unrivaled technological prowess.
“While not launching was disappointing, the recent test provided invaluable information to learn from and continue ahead,” Brig. Gen. Heath Collins, armament directorate program executive officer, wrote in the statement. “This is why we test,” he added. But the technical and engineering challenges surrounding their deployment mean the United States is still yet to develop a hypersonic weapon that can be fielded in large numbers. The Air Force’s goal for the program is to deliver a hypersonic weapon capability “in the early 2020s,” a spokesman said Wednesday.
Given that many of the details surrounding such weapons systems are classified, it is difficult to tell where the United States stands in comparison to foreign militaries. Russia and China have reported successful missile tests.
