Brent Burns: “I’ve been in the league long enough to know that when you’re doing these meetings at this time, there’s a lot of changes that happen and need to happen.”

SAN JOSE – The Sharks have gone through enough exit interviews after missing the playoffs in recent years to know that changes will be in order this offseason.

The Sharks finished the season in sixth place in the Pacific Division, the same position they had in the temporary West Division last season after a pandemic-shortened 56-game schedule. This marks the first time in franchise history that the team will have missed the playoffs in three consecutive years.

Besides the inevitable roster changes, with an eye toward addressing the scoring woes, the Sharks and their new general manager also have to determine what to do with the team’s coaching staff. “I think that I’ve had a good relationship with the whole coaching staff all year,” Karlsson said. “What’s been said between us is going to stay between us and again, I’m not going to tell anyone anything different than I haven’t told them.”Burns was asked if he has thought about chasing a Stanley Cup elsewhere, or if he wants to remain with the Sharks. Now 37, Burns is entering the sixth year of an eight-year, $64 million contract extension he signed in Nov. 2016.
