The Blue Jackets started the season 3-9-0 and looked lost at both ends of the ice. But over the last nine games, they've showed signs of progress.
Mathematically, it was unlikely the Blue Jackets would continue to struggle as deeply as they did in the first 12 faceoffs. In those games, the team's PDO, which can be used as a shorthand metric for luck and is the combination of a team's on-ice shooting percentage plus its on-ice save percentage, was 95.6, per Natural Stat Trick.
In the past nine games, the Blue Jackets' PDO is up to 99.2, which is proof of their improved goaltending and increased offensive success. And it isn't just a matter of their luck turning; they look visibly more structured defensively and more dangerous offensively. Defenseman Erik Gudbranson credits that to a deeper understanding of the defensive system Larsen introduced in training camp, particularly among the wingers, who have more responsibilities than they did before.
"Traditionally, the wingers are kind of just making sure their defenseman doesn’t go backdoor, and if that happens it’s on them," Gudbranson said."Now they’re having to play in between two guys and play that style. It’s a little bit of an adjustment for them. ... We work on it a lot, and more recently, we’ve been paying a lot more attention to it, which is really good. Defense turns into offense in this league.
Things are still far from perfect for the Blue Jackets, but after such a poor beginning to the season, the tides may be starting to turn.
