A potent storm system that triggered deadly severe weather from Texas to Florida Panhandle on Wednesday is poised to sweep to the East Coast on Thursday, bringing a risk of more powerful storms from the shores of Lake Erie to Tampa Bay.
High winds from the storms cut power to over 250,000 customers across the South on Wednesday, with the greatest number in Louisiana. On Thursday morning, more than 125,000 customers were in the dark from Louisiana into the Carolinas.The storms also triggered over 120 flash flood warnings and about as many flood reports, including in New Orleans; Mobile, Ala.; and Tallahassee.
A Level 3 of 5 severe weather threat covers parts of the Ohio Valley, including Canton, Ohio, and Charleston, W.Va.,. A Level 2 of 5 risk zone surrounds that, encompassing Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Columbus. Another Level 2 of 5 risk covers a swath of Florida from Jacksonville to Orlando and Tampa.Advertisement
Widespread persistent rainfall, with 1 to 2 inches expected in much of the region, could also bring isolated flooding.
