Hyndburn Borough Council’s proposal for a new complex at Wilsons Playing Fields in Clayton-le-Moors to replace the swimming pool and gym in Mercer Hall in Great Harwood has been confirmed
A campaigning councillor has vowed to ask for a new review into the decision to create a new £12million leisure centre and close the existing swimming pool in a historic building if Labour wins next month’s local elections.
Calling on the authority to look again at either refurbishing the Mercer Hall pool or locating the new one on the former gas holder site in Great Harwood, Cllr McKenzie said: “This decision was based on poor information. You have picked the wrong place. The footfall is going to be far less than in Great Harwood.
Leisure trust chief executive Lyndsey Sims said she was confident Sport England’s objection could be overcome and that talks on the issue were under way. She added that drainage concerns from Lancashire County Council were also being addressed.
