Many happy returns to Vera, who celebrated with an Indian buffet and dancing to Neil Diamond
Vera Duffy, who lives at Moorhead Rest Home in Accrington, was delighted by a surprise birthday party organised by her family at Enfield Cricket Club in Church on Saturday, July 1. Around 100 people came to the party to celebrate the milestone.
Vera’s daughter-in-law, Louise Hunter, said: “The party was great and she was flabbergasted and surprised. She was also delighted to have received a birthday card from the King. “Vera is a very sociable, very out going and knowledgeable person. She likes to help around the care home.”The venue was adorned with balloons and guests enjoyed a superb hot and cold buffet which included steak pie and peas, sandwiches, and Indian food. Vera danced to songs by Dean Martin and Neil Diamond played by the DJ.
She was gifted a beautiful cake with a swan design and she wore a swan brooch to the party which was gifted to her. Vera was born in Burnley and had a brother called Alan, who lived in Australia. For the first time she moved away from home at the age of 18 during the Second World War to work at Bristol Aircraft as a plane wiring engineer and switchboard operator.
Vera met her late husband, John Duffy from Accrington when she was 22 years old. The couple had eight children; Neil, Alan, John, Charlie, Paul, Christine, Evelyn and Linda.
