Obtaining an abortion pill by visiting a doctor online has proven to be a safe and effective way to terminate a pregnancy, with nearly 100% of women not requiring any follow-up care, according to a UCSF study released Thursday.
The UCSF study, published in Nature Medicine, examined the cases of more than 6,000 women in 20 states and Washington, D.C., and found there were no serious adverse events 99.8% of the time, and 98% of the time patients didn’t require follow-up care. A serious adverse event would be an emergency, such as if a patient needed to be admitted to the hospital for an infection or needed a blood transfusion.
Upadhyay has been studying abortion safety for several years now, but noted that this was the first study conducted on this scale, which is important for studying serious adverse events, like emergency room visits. Nearly 10% of abortions are now obtained through virtual visits nationwide, according to a statement from UCSF.While providers do not mail these medications to these states, Upadhyay said, there are workarounds. Those include mailing the pills to a friend in another state, such as California, where abortion is legal.
