NEW: The baby formula factory that has been closed for months due to contamination has restarted production, the company says.

President Joe Biden meets virtually with infant formula manufacturers from the South Court Auditorium on the White House complex in Washington, Wednesday, June 1, 2022, as his administration works to ease nationwide shortages by importing foreign supplies and using the Defense Production Act to speed domestic production.

The plant’s reopening is one of several federal actions that are expected to improve supplies in the weeks ahead. President Joe Biden’s administration has eased import rules for foreign manufacturers, airlifted formula from Europe and invoked federal emergency rules to prioritize U.S. production. Abbott’s February recall of several leading brands, including Similac, squeezed supplies that had already been strained by supply chain disruptions and stockpiling during COVID-19 shutdowns.

Abbott Restarts Baby Formula Plant Linked to ContaminationAbbott Restarts Baby Formula Plant Linked to ContaminationAbbott says it’s restarted production at the Michigan factory that’s tied to the ongoing baby formula shortage. The plant has been closed since February due to contamination, and that’s led to nationwide supply problems for formulas needed to feed infants. The reopening isn’t expected to have an immediate affect on availability. Abbott says it’ll prioritize production of its specialty formulas for infants with severe food allergies and digestive problems. Once production resumes it’ll still take several weeks before those products arrive in stores and pharmacies. The plant’s reopening is one of several actions expected to improve supplies, including federal deliveries of imported formula from overseas.
