Gov. Abbott says he’s sending a message to Biden by busing thousands of migrants from Texas border towns to D.C. But so far, it's local aid groups and faith organizations who have borne the brunt of Abbott’s gambit.

Amanda Andrade-Rhoades, For The Washington Post / For The Washington PostWASHINGTON — Gov. Greg Abbott says he’s sending a message to President Joe Biden by busing thousands of migrants from Texas border towns to D.C. But so far, it’s neither the Biden administration nor local officials who have borne the brunt of Abbott’s gambit.

District officials have insisted it’s a federal problem. So far, the groups say, the city has only helped secure a $1 million grant from Federal Emergency Management Agency for one of the organizations, SAMU First Response, a D.C. nonprofit that is part of a larger network of international refugee assistance groups based in Spain.

"Because of President Biden’s continued refusal to acknowledge the crisis caused by his open border policies, the State of Texas has had to take unprecedented action to keep our communities safe," Abbott said in a statement."In addition to Washington, D.C., New York City is the ideal destination for these migrants, who can receive the abundance of city services and housing that Mayor Eric Adams has boasted about within the sanctuary city.

Sometimes that work is being done at Union Station, the busy transit station near where the buses arrive in D.C. Other times it’s in churches across the region that have offered up space. Virtually none of the local groups welcoming migrants were set up to do the type of work they are now doing.
