Officials want to repurpose the old Rahway Valley Railroad line into a multi-use recreational trail.
“The Rahway Valley Rails-to-Trails Project is a great example of how this program can be used to create multi-use trails that provide safe transportation options and connect people to jobs, boosting the local economy,” North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority Executive Director David W. Behrend said in a statement.
Today, most of the old Rahway Valley Railroad is overgrown. Some of its tracks are still visible beneath tall grass and weeds. Union County is the third most-densely-populated county in the state with approximately 575,345 residents, according to the latest census data.The Rahway Valley Rails-to-Trails Project aims to create safe multi-use trails from the abandoned Rahway Valley Railroad section that traverses the Kenilworth and neighboring Roselle Park. The new trails, designed for pedestrians and bicyclists, will connect communities, businesses, shopping and recreational opportunities.
