Gov. Mike Dunleavy and Premier Ranj Pillai met to discuss shared issues and seek out solutions and enhancing the relationship between the Yukon Territory and Alaska.
ByFAIRBANKS, Alaska - Gov. Mike Dunlevy visited Whitehorse in Yukon Territory , Canada in early February to meet with Ranj Pillai, the premier of YT. The premier being the Canadian version of a governor.
Leading these discussions were talks about expanding an existing agreement related to transportation. In an exclusive interview with Gov. Dunleavy, Pillai said he sees a “tremendous opportunity” to create an Alaska-Yukon transportation corridor. This cooperation is already in existence to some degree with the YT being heavily reliant on Alaska as Skagway acts as their main port already. The vision of the transportation corridor however is extensive and promising, with concepts of creating enhancements that have been long needed and long desired by Alaskans. Under the Trump administration, an agreement was signed between the U.S. and Canada allowing a railroad to cross the border.
On the note of security, arctic security took the spotlight with both Dunleavy and Pillai expressing concerns about changes to the arctic climate and the changing geo-political alliances. Military cooperation was also brought reflecting on Canada’s historical roles in aiding the fight against the Japanese during World War II, specifically fighting the Japanese in the Aleutians. “There was Canadian blood shed in that effort,” said Dunleavy.
