But if researchers can understand how those changes are occurring, they may be able to develop a treatment to prevent them or alleviate COVID-19 symptoms, said Wenbo Li, the senior author of the study and an associate professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.

Researchers from UTHealth Houston and the San Diego Biomedical Research Institute used cutting-edge methods and technology to study millions of cells beginning in the fall of 2020, Li said. The researchers found that the virus causes the chromatin architecture in a normal cell to become “de-organized,” Li said.
