The call to their Granada Hills home came in just before midnight on July 4, 2020 while David Aks and his wife, Ann Baltz, were sleeping. It was their case worker at the Red Cross disaster action team wanting to know if they could respond to an apartment house fire on Parthenia Avenue, not far from the Northridge metro station.
This is what they signed up for, though, after retiring and finding themselves “living in a cocoon,” as David called it. Nice house, nice backyard with a pool — and plenty of time to think that maybe it was time to break out of their comfort zone. “Traumatic,” David would call the scene. All his Red Cross training had stressed he had to stay focused and do his job — see to their immediate needs, and comfort and support these people having the worst day of their lives.
Ann had seen that same look of sheer disbelief on the faces of five families who had been displaced in a mobile home park fire a few weeks earlier. She went with a supervisor because she was new on the team.
