The Metropolitan Museum’s British galleries were “too old-fashioned,” says curator Wolf Burchard. A new redesign aims to put the spotlight on innovators and entrepreneurs instead.
On March 2, New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art will reopen its British galleries, following a complete renovation lasting more than three years.
The old British galleries, created in the 1980s, were “too old-fashioned,” says Met curator Wolf Burchard. They “focused primarily on aristocratic patronage and collecting,” including three rooms recreated from 18th-century mansions. Despite their prime first-floor location, Mr. Burchard recalls, “nobody ever went there.”
