A new study suggests a self-administered simple at-home test can detect subtle signs of dementia up to six months earlier than current screenings.
The eight-year study evaluated 665 patients from the Ohio State University Memory Disorders Clinic with the SAGE and MMSE exams. The participants included patients with at least two visits six months apart classified based on their results as subjective cognitive decline , mild cognitive impairment , or Alzheimer’s disease dementia. Researchers then compared the change in SAGE and MMSE sores.
Of those evaluated, 400 met the inclusion criteria. Researchers found that SAGE was able to detect when patients were approaching MCI dementiathan those who used the MMSE exam. Of those patients that eventually progressed from MCI to dementia, scores dropped 1.91 points per year on the SAGE test and 1.68 points per year on the MMSE. Of those who initially were found to have Alzheimer’s disease dementia, SAGE scores dropped 1.82 points per year and MMSE scores dropped 2.38 scores per year.
