'A moral and ethical obligation': Martin University will cut tuition, forgive debt.
President Biden announced the cancellation of $10,000 in student loan debt for borrowers who earn less than $125,000 per year.will cut tuition nearly in half and erase up to $10,000 in debt for qualifying students in an effort to make college more affordable and accessible.
Martin has about 225 students currently enrolled. Indiana’s only Predominantly Black Institution of higher education, it serves a largely non-traditional population of adult learners from low-income households. As such, Huddleston said it has a moral imperative to address the college affordability issue.
“We, too, are committed to a prosperous Indianapolis for all,” said Mayor Joe Hogsett. “No matter what your zip code happens to be, no matter your parents’ income or any other aspect of your background, you should expect access to the tools required to move up the ladder.”In five years, the rate dropped a total of 12 percentage points, falling from 65% in 2015 to just 53% in 2020.
“We recognize that we have a moral and ethical obligation to not put and keep people who are low-income in the bondage of debt,” Huddleston said. They’re students like Sabae Martin who, at 65, is going back to school to get a degree in addiction counseling after having raised two children and had a career as a paralegal. Martin said she’s excited to enter the next season of her life that her degree will make possible.
