The first time a dark spot on the planet has ever been observed with a telescope on Earth, the baffling discovery came while astronomers were studying the planet using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope. It’s the latest piece of a jigsaw for scientists trying to figure out how the methane atmosphere on Neptune works from afar. The first-ever close-up images from Neptune—sent back 34 years ago by NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft—showed bright cirrus clouds high in its atmosphere , but also a dark spot, which had disappeared a few years later. Another was seen in Neptune’s northern hemisphere in 2018.
Irwin and his team think the spots are caused by air particles darkening in a layer below the main visible haze layer, as ices and hazes mix in Neptune’s atmosphere.which splits the incoming light into its constituent colours or wavelengths.
