During one of Cavanagh’s auditions, she read lines with a lineup that included Debra Winger as Dottie. “When I was leaving that audition, Rosie O’Donnell followed me out,” Cavanagh recalled. “She said, ‘You’re the best Marla we’ve seen so far.’ And in my stupid brain, all I heard was the ‘so far.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, well, that was pretty good for me.’”
