‘You can see layers of fat on top of the water, and you can make out the solids in the water and toilet paper. Yes, human faeces’ SerinaSandhu1 reports
, and you can make out the solids in the water and toilet paper. Yes, human faeces,” says Joy Rickman, who has lived nearby for 30 years.
“Every day we hear about another river that is slowly dying. From sewage, agricultural runoff and hazardous chemicals, to flood, drought, straightened concrete banks, barriers and invasive non-native species – our rivers are under attack. “The existence of these crossover points is a weakness in the system that also allows sewage to enter the rainwater drains. If a sewer pipe gets blocked, the sewage will start to back up. When it reaches a crossover point it will flow into drains that lead to the Wealdstone Brook. This sees the river suffer from continually high levels of sewage pollution, evidenced by the ammonia that Thames Water’s monitors detect.
Signs dotted along the river’s path that say “no bathing or paddling in the brook” seem like an understatement. Fly tipping has reduced since Rickman and others campaigned for tall fencing along bridges that cross the brook. It hasn’t been eliminated though. Thames Water helped clean the river of surface water pollution last year and conducted sewer cleans to ensure its network was working properly.
Thames Water said: “We’re aware of the ongoing pollution issues in the Wealdstone Brook area and have worked closely with the council and the local residents’ association to help rectify the situation.
