REVIEW: 'The nostalgia-filled sequel... is a two-hour treatise on the 1983 original’s presumed greatness. But the movie is so dull and bereft of joy that you’ll find yourself questioning the need for its very existence in real time.'
Of course, “A Christmas Story Christmas” isn’t the first attempt to recapture the magic of the original. “My Summer Story,” also directed by Bob Clark and based on Jean Shepherd’s writings, came out about a decade later. It was followed in 2012 by the forgettable “A Christmas Story 2″ starring Daniel Stern.
Upon their arrival, Mrs. Parker tells Ralphie not to mourn his father, but to instead honor his memory by putting on the best damn Christmas there ever was. The assignment gives him a chance to reconnect with childhood friends, face old enemies and reminisce endlessly about one Christmas in particular.
The sequel is, at times, funny and sentimental. Credit that to director Clay Kaytis and his co-screenwriter Nick Schenk. Their reverence for the source material comes through in their respectful treatment of the original characters and actors, as well as the attention to detail spent on recreating the Parker’s house on Cleveland Street and the rest of the town. If you didn’t already know, you’d swear the movie was shot in Cleveland and not Bulgaria.
