Beginning late tonight, Earth will pass near a fractured comet and into the potential debris trail of the tau Herculids meteor shower. The comet, discovered in 1930 and dubbed 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann, broke apart in 1995. Now, our planet is on a collision course with its fragmented, icy remains. "If the fragments were ejected with speeds greater than twice the normal speeds — fast enough to reach Earth — we might get a meteor shower," NASA writes on
