There are 85 names being considered as the U.S. Army looks to rename nine bases named for Confederate generals or sympathizers, including three people with Alabama ties. See them here ➡️

Sgt. 1st Class Robert L. Howard, a native of Opelika, carries a North Vietnamese Army prisoner of war. Howard received the Medal of Honor for his service in Vietnam. His name is among those being considered by the U.S. Army as it looks to rename bases with Confederate names.On Dec. 30, 1968, then Sgt. First Class Robert Lewis Howard was a platoon sergeant leading American-Vietnamese soldiers on a rescue mission to save a U.S soldier behind enemy lines.

Howard is one of three people with Alabama ties whose name are under consideration. The list also includes a president, four star generals, decorated war heroes, an abolitionist and a Navajo code talker.The 2021 National Defense Authorization Act created an eight-person Congressional commission to develop a plan for renaming the bases, including Alabama’s Fort Rucker. Others on the list are Camp Beauregard, Louisiana.; Fort Benning, Georgia.; Fort Gordon, Georgia.; Fort Hood, Texas; Fort A. P.

The post is the primary flight training installation for U.S. Army aviators and is home to the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence and the Army Aviation Museum.The commission said it received 34,000 submissions, including 3,670 unique names, as part of its renaming efforts. The list was narrowed down to its current number “through careful review and deliberation.”
