“It is a rare reaction to COVID,” said Dr. David Leslie, a Franciscan Children’s attending physician. “He’s the first case we’ve seen — and hopefully the last.”

Although Isaiah previously had tested negative for COVID multiple times after a close contact exposure in December, doctors believe that he had COVID but never presented symptoms, and his current diagnoses are a result of it.

He spent 17 days in the intensive care unit at BCH. He then was transferred to Franciscan Children’s on Feb. 2 for continued rehabilitative care, but his condition was severe. He couldn’t eat, could barely stand and had lost all muscle tone. Since then, he has bounced back, is healthy and, after 42 days in three hospitals, walked out of Franciscan Children’s on his own two feet with his parents.

“It felt amazing just seeing … everyone blowing bubbles for him and so excited to see him reach this point,” his mother said. “From seeing him lifeless in the ICU, to this. … We have our little boy back.”
