Some of Disney's live-action remakes will receive sequels in the coming years, but several of their recent adaptations should remain a single feature.
Some of Disney's live-action remakes performed so well that audiences eagerly awaited a sequel—but others would be best left as is. The House of Mouse has been working through its classic animated films, turning them into live-action masterpieces. This has been met with mixed reviews from audiences. Some are thrilled to see their favorite characters come to life, while others would rather Disney avoid tarnishing the legacy of their classics.
The problem with continuing Belle and Prince Adam's story is that there is no exciting direction to take. The duo got their happily ever after, and with the prince no longer being a beast, the central hook of their story is gone. The only direction to take would be backward, which is why Disney+ had initially ordered a prequel series starring Luke Evans and Josh Gad as Gaston and LeFou.
Dumbo Dumbo was always a sad and oddly frightening movie, which should have made it a perfect project for director Tim Burton. Drunken elephant dreams and tragically mourning mothers would have been precisely his element, and the 2019 remake certainly delivered on the sad and weird. However, despite Dumbo's dark themes, Burton's film was found to be dull and uninteresting. Ultimately, the movie bombed at the box office.
Pinocchio fell prey to all of Disney's live-action faux pas. It was too much like the original, was full of unsettling talking CGI animals, and eliminated any of the important moral lessons that the original contained. This makes a sequel inadvisable. The entire point of Pinocchio's story is that he learned to behave and was therefore rewarded with his dreams coming true. To continue this story, the success of the 'real boy' would need to be undone.
