.annasui, Adam Selman, and more designers reflect on the glory days of Opening Ceremony’s 11 Howard Street store.
are key words when I think about shopping. Opening Ceremony was always an adventure in shopping, a guarantee that you’d discover interesting new names, new brands. And lately they’ve been taking us on journeys to China or Mexico, and beyond for wonderful handicrafts and clothing!
I was so lucky to be part of Humberto and Carol’s world! They supported my retrospective exhibition by having me reproduce looks for their shops from my past collections. They chose styles that were part of The Museum of Arts & Design exhibit, and also the baby doll dresses, tiaras, and Cupcake Cafe handbags that appeared in the Met Camp show.”“We're still in shock! Opening Ceremony helped raise us and so many of our friends. We both worked for them.
Their retail spaces felt like a positive experiment, always with amazingly motivated and charming staff, like some sort of club house. Our business has grown up with them as a partner and it will be very sad to continue without them. The closure really feels like the end of an era and we wish the best to Carol and Humberto as they continue onto their next form.”“When I first launched my brand, people would ask, ‘What do you want to do?’ I said, ‘I just want to sell at Opening Ceremony.
They really nurtured our brands from the start—and we’re not alone. There are so many brands that started at OC where they were the only stockest for years. We were all just figuring it out and they were all supporting us through that process. Even if you weren’t going into the store to buy you could always look and get inspired by what was there. It really feels like the official end of an era.
OC were the first to celebrate Daisy, bringing our fledgling local project to a global platform. They were genuinely fearless and never shied from taking a chance on burgeoning designers. Their support gave us stability to grow through the most fragile first years and we’ll always treasure their belief in us. OC New York became a home away from home and we’ll miss them dearly.”
