Over 300 Illinois artists submitted images of their work for the Evanston Art Center’s 26th Evanston + Vicinity Biennial show of which 55 were chosen to be part in the show.

Over 300 Illinois artists submitted images of their work for the Evanston Art Center’s 26th Evanston + Vicinity Biennial show. Three judges juried those submissions, choosing 55 artists to participate in the prestigious show.

Danoff noted that they choose jurors from different backgrounds “so we get a very well-rounded show.” Johnson decided to enter a piece in the biennial show because, “This was an opportunity to show one of my works right in my hometown,” she said.“It’s a very personal piece,” Johnson said. “It’s a beautiful piece of wood and on top of that is a blouse — a choli — that you wear under a sari. It has very long arms along the trunk.” Letters copied from her mother’s correspondence to her are written on the choli.

Sarah Kaiser-Amaral’s submission, “A Quiet Afternoon,” is an oil on canvas work. She chose to present that evocative image of light streaming through a window and reflecting off a wall and floor because of the positive feedback she received. June Chen Ahleman’s work, “Waiting or Knowing; a Self-Portrait,” was done in oil on wood. The young artist decided to submit this work because, “It’s my strongest piece technically,” she explained.
