That time in Columbus meant more time to work with Blue Jackets goaltending coach Niklas Backstrom, who won the William M. Jennings Trophy in 2006-07, which goes to the goalies who has allowed the fewest goals in at least 25 games, and was a Vezina Trophy finalist in 2008-09 with the Minnesota Wild. Backstrom joined the Blue Jackets prior to the 2023-24 season and he has proved an invaluable resource for the goaltenders in Columbus, including Greaves for his time in the NHL.
The NHL team lost numerous players to injuries throughout March, prompting emergency call-ups of several members of the Monsters, including Greaves. “Honestly, I think every goal whether your 6 feet, 6-1, 6-2, every goalie has different skill sets, different body composition,” Greaves said. “I think every guy’s trying to understand what works for them. So it’s not really something I ever think about. For me, it’s just about seeing the ice well, reading plays well and just moving well in the crease. I think if you do those things, you’re gonna set yourself up for success regardless.
