The city is about to see an influx of the world's best young classical violinists.
Each violinist will perform a 45-minute recital including pieces by Bach, Paganini and Mozart. Session 1 is 9:30 a.m.-12:40 p.m. Session 2 is 2-6:50 p.m. Sixteen violinists who have advanced are in this round. Each will play a recital of standard works from the 19th and 20th centuries along with the world premiere of the commissioned piece by American composer John Harbison. Six finalists advance to the finals rounds.
The 40 violinists who will compete were selected from a large pool of applicants — 103 from 21 countries. Reviewing each video recording was a jury panel composed of Jaime Laredo, the competition's jury president and artistic director; 2006 Laureate Bella Hristova; and Julliard School faculty Joel Smirnoff.
Those competing are between the ages of 17 and 29, and they are from 16 countries on five continents. Most come from the U.S. and South Korea. The nine jury members for the competition include Laredo, Noah Bendix-Balgley, Ivan Chan, Pamela Frank, Yuzuko Horigome, Dong-Suk Kang, Cho-Liang Lin, Mihaela Martin and Liviu Prunaru.Seventy violins, violas and cellos that belonged to Jews before and during World War II. A father-and-son duo of violinmakers — Amnon and Avshalom Weinstein — have collected them from survivors and restored them since the end of the war. The exhibit will run through Sept. 26 at Rhythm! Discovery Center, 110 W.
