The Rangers’ win over the Rays wasn’t all smiles though as Josh Jung had to be removed after being hit on the right wrist.

Texas Rangers starter Dane Dunning pitches against the Tampa Bay Rays during the fifth inning of a baseball game, Monday, April 1, 2024, in St. Petersburg, Fla. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The big event of homecoming week at the University of Florida is called Gator Growl. Big pep rally. Lots of chomping going on. We imagine a bunch of Tom Petty gets played.

Dunning used five different pitches at least 10 times each and got 18 swings and misses, tied for the second most in his career. According to Baseball Savant, which uses MLB’s Statcast system, none of them were his brand new forkball, but that may be simply because the pitch is so new that the system hasn’t had time to calibrate it yet. It often makes changes overnight.

The only issue: The third time through the order was a problem. Dunning, who led the Rangers’ in innings pitched last year, allowed a one-out homer to Richie Palacios in the seventh, then walked Curtis Mead and allowed another homer. A year ago, Dunning allowed hitters a .372 slugging percentage the first two times through the order; it went to .435 after that. It’s an issue for all pitchers.: Yes, you read that right.

With Rays third baseman Curtis Mead playing where the shortstop normally does, Langford saw opportunity after opportunity in front of him and pushed the issue. By the time Mead fielded Jared Walsh’s grounder, Langford was nearly on top of second base and never stopped running because there was nobody to cover third. When catcher René Pinto tried to hustle over to cover third, it left home unattended. Langford kept going.

, Rangers beat writer/insider. Evan has covered the Rangers since 1997. He has twice been named one of the top 10 beat writers in the country by the AP Sports Editors. His passions outside of covering baseball are his wife, Gina, his two step kids, two crazy dogs & barbecue. Let's not discuss the cat. Evan graduated from Georgia State University, but oddly is a Georgia fan.
