Alaska, Richardson, and Steese Highways improvement projects are included in the Governor’s amended capital budget plan.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Under the Governor’s amended capital budget for fiscal year 2024 is a proposal to improve the Alaska Highway, the Richardson Highway and the Steese Highway.
This includes replacement of Interior Alaska bridges “that date back to the World War Two era” according to Ryan Anderson, Commissioner for the Department of Transportation & Public Facilities “We have a great opportunity to replace aging assets, improve safety, and ensure economic vitality to Alaska’s Interior,” said Anderson.
Replacements will include 3 bridges on the Alaska Highway; 1 at the Robertson River, 1 at the Johnson River and 1 at the Gerstle River. The other 2 bridge replacements will be the Richardson Highway northbound Chena Flood Control Bridge at milepost 346 and the Steese Highway Bridge that under crosses Chena Hot Springs Road.
According to a DOT press release, “these bridges have presented challenges for heavy freight haulers traveling to and from Canada and between the Port of Valdez and the North Slope for many years. The Robertson River and Gerstle River bridges were built in 1944 and are well below modern standards for width. The Gerstle River Bridge is a height-restricted, overhead-truss structure.
DOT expects the bridges to last seventy-five years and accommodate transportation needs well into the future.
