A teenager knife fanatic, a psychopathic hammer attacker and a romance fraudster are among the criminals locked up over the last month

A 15-year-old knife fanatic who stabbed a teenager to death and psychopathic hammer attacker who carried out his fantasy of murdering a stranger were just two of the worst offenders sent to jail in the UK in June.

These are some of the most shocking court cases that have been widely reported in the UK in recent weeks. As the Volvo moved beside them, a window was wound down and four or five shots fired, with two rounds hitting Mr Sarkus in the right eye and a third fired into the back of Bristan Williams. Mr Williams felt something hit his back but kept running and only realised he had been hit after he got on a bus and noticed bleeding.

Jackson, who had known Ms Taylor for some time, hid the young mother’s body under a duvet, with weights and push bikes stacked on top. They had seen each other during the day on August 15, but Ms Taylor’s family alerted police when she did not respond to their calls or messages. Muslim convert Matthew King, 19, expressed a desire to kill military personnel as he prepared to stake out a British Army barracks in Stratford, east London. He discussed his plans and shared a “gory fantasy” with an online girlfriend with whom he struck up an adolescent flirtation, the Old Bailey heard.

In January, King, from Wickford in Essex, pleaded guilty to preparation of terrorist acts between December 22 2021 and May 17 2022. He was handed a discretionary life sentence with a minimum term of six years in the first terrorism sentencing in England and Wales to be televised. Luke Roe, of Potter Street, Worksop, and Matthew Roe, of Franklin Road, Jacksdale, were convicted of murder in May following a nine-week trial at Nottingham Crown Court. Matthew was also found guilty of four counts of fraud by false representation in relation to Mr Thwaites’s bank card, while the jury found Luke guilty of one count of fraud by false representation.

Hussain, of Haydon End, Swindon, Wiltshire, falsely claimed he was a police officer, that his father had been involved in a skiing accident abroad, that his father had died and that his mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer. The court heard how one woman used her family’s gold heirlooms to raise money for Hussain, while others borrowed money from parents to pay his demands.

Ali Ceesay, Abdul Mohamed, Mehdi Younes, Jaymar Creary and Joyce Manzenza Five members of a gang ride-out have been locked up for life for a revenge shooting which left one man dead and two passers-by injured. Sharmake Mohamud, 22, was fatally shot while walking along Green Lanes in Haringey, north London, on the evening of September 21 in 2021.

His “spotter” Abdul Mohamed, 25, and Mehdi Younes, 22, from Enfield, were found guilty of the charges and were jailed for life with minimum terms of 34 years and 31 years respectively for their roles. Younger recruits Jaymar Creary and Joyce Manzenza, both now aged 18, from Waltham Forest, were also convicted after a trial and were each detained for at least 22 years.

Ms Wisniewska, who cried in the public gallery when addressed by the judge, had been called to the scene of the stabbing and said: “I have flashbacks to that night, trying desperately to keep my boy alive.” The judge also appeared to become emotional when he referred back to comments made by her younger son, aged six, who told her: “Mum, don’t cry so much, Tomasz wouldn’t want you to.”

Alfie died on February 18, 2021, after being found with 50 injuries all over his body, having been hit with a leather belt and “dunked” in the bath at his home in Droitwich, Worcestershire. His mother Carla Scott, 35, was found guilty of manslaughter and child cruelty, while 41-year-old Dirk Howell was convicted of murder.

Scott, of Vashon Drive, was found guilty of child cruelty, and Howell, of Princip Street, Birmingham, admitted cruelty. Both denied unlawful killing but were convicted by jurors. In his trial, Feld concocted what the judge described as a preposterous “cock-and-bull” story and launched a homophobic rant at the victim, who had an ex-wife and two children in Sri Lanka and an ex-civil partner in the UK. Feld was found guilty of murder in March and in June Mr Justice Bryan jailed him for life with a minimum term of 28 years.

Sunderland University student Alexander Carr was seen by a witness cuddling his friend, Michelle Hanson, 47, in her sitting room earlier on the evening he killed her last December. Ms Hanson, a mother-of-five who lived in an upstairs flat in Brady Street, Sunderland, had been paid that day and bought a bottle of vodka and a takeaway.

Carr had admitted murder at an earlier hearing, having had a guilty plea to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility rejected. Judge Paul Sloan sentenced him to life with a minimum term of 19 years and three months. CCTV footage played to the court showed Pottinger brandishing a knife before pocketing it and hitting Luke over the head with his skateboard. Later, Pottinger could be seen to redraw the knife, stabbing Luke eight times before fleeing, leaving his victim bleeding in the road.

Arslan admitted manslaughter on the first day of his trial but denied murder and perverting the course of justice by concealing Ms Bashir’s body. A jury at the Old Bailey found him guilty of the charges at a later hearing. He would use the dark web under the username “Globe Trotter” on an international paedophile chat site which allowed users to share indecent images of children and use message boards to discuss and tell stories of abuse. Prosecutors said Mould’s conversations showed he would travel to smaller cities and rural areas in the two countries to meet local families and befriend young boys, often offering gifts and money, in order to groom and sexually abuse them.

Michael Saltmarsh A “selfish” drink driver ploughed into a married couple after running a red light. Michael Saltmarsh, 48, hit “soulmates” Wendy and David Gay with his white van as they were crossing a road in Caerphilly, South Wales. Passengers of the car behind Saltmarsh at the time of the collision said he had not slowed down as he approached the crossing even though the lights had been on red for some time. Collison investigators determined Saltmarsh must have been driving between 37-52mph on the 30mph road when he crashed into his victims.

King, of Cornfield Terrace, Eastbourne, who was a friend of Ms Cooper in Eastbourne, was arrested after a number of text messages were found between himself and Ms Cooper arranging for him to help her with boxes for her impending move. Paris Mayo A teenager killed her newborn son after giving birth alone in her living room. Paris Mayo, 19, was found guilty of murdering Stanley Mayo, who was just hours old.

Birmingham Crown Court was told Vidya Kaur, 83, died three weeks after the attack, in which she sustained a fractured skull. Police said nurses and another patient who tried to help the victim were also attacked, receiving minor injuries.
