Falling stock markets and rising inflation are diminishing public pensions, but that’s not all retirees have to worry about
Falling stock prices and rising food and energy prices during the first half of 2022 has been unkind to pensions.
A pension’s funded status measures the fund’s financial obligations and its current assets. When a plan is fully funded, it is expected to pay out full benefits to current and future beneficiaries. The states with funded statuses of less than 60% included Illinois and Kentucky, and their projected status did not change between 2021 and 2022.
Equable found the average investment return in 2021 for public pensions was 25.3%, but in 2022 is projected to be negative 10.4%. States have also altered their investment rate of return assumptions, from 7% in 2021 to just slightly below at 6.9% in 2022. Of the plans Equable analyzed, 83 state and local pensions assume an investment return below 7% in 2022, up from 65 in 2020.
