Work to increase the capacity of St Andrew's Primary School in Shifnal should be complete by 2026.
By Andy Giddings and Keri TriggA school will be rebuilt at a cost of £12.6m to help it keep up with a growing demand for places.
St Andrew's Church of England School in Shifnal, Shropshire, is "no longer capable of providing sufficient accommodation", the council said. Two new portable classrooms will provide a stop-gap solution until then. Old buildings which opened in the 1960s will be demolished and the school's capacity will grow from 294 to 420, two classes for every age group.
A number of extensions have been added to the site in recent years including a new building for reception classes. Shropshire Council's Property Services Group said St Andrew's had been chosen because of the demand for places and also because of "the age of the buildings, their general condition and other shortcomings".The majority of the funding for the project will come from the Department for Education.
