Lord of the Rings’ Witch-king explained.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT One of the core villains of The Lord of the Rings is the Witch-king of Angmar, and here are the main reveals about the mysterious antagonist included in the books or the film franchise. The Witch-king is described both in J.R.R. Tolkien's original works and Peter Jackson's film adaptations as the main lieutenant of Sauron's armies.
Due to the Witch-king being the most powerful and the commander of the Ringwraiths, it is safe to assume that he was fittingly the most powerful of the Nine Kings of Men. While Tolkien nor Jackson confirmed this, the status of the Witch-king within the ranks of Sauron's army is enough to prove this to be true. This fact also links to another detail of the Witch-kings' life before he was corrupted, one that is connected to one of the powerful races of Men in Middle-earth.
The people of these kingdoms were mostly wiped out. That said, some men survived in the village of Bree and its surrounding settlements. Similarly, the Hobbits of the Shire survived, and any other remaining Dúndedain created homes south of Rivendell to become known as the Rangers of the North. This all stemmed from the Witch-king's war against the successor kingdoms of Arnor.
In Return of the King, the Witch-king confronts Éowyn of Rohan and Meriadoc Brandybuck/Merry. Merry stabs the Witch-king in the leg with a Barrow-blade, weakening him and allowing Éowyn to stab him in the void of his helmet. This kills the Witch-king and fulfills Glorfindel's prophecy that he would not fall by the hand of man, as a Hobbit and a woman were responsible for his defeat.
3 The Witch-king Wasn't His Best-Known Title In Middle-earth Interestingly, the title of the Witch-king was primarily used in Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. The moniker of the Witch-king is actually only used once in Tolkien's entire works, in the appendix of the original books. As such, the Witch-king was referenced by a lot of other names in Middle-earth before Jackson's usage of the name in the movie trilogy popularized it.
