Rey's return in the next Star Wars movie has the potential to be great, but some harsh realities become clear upon rewatching the sequel trilogy.
Rey is set to return for another Star Wars movie, but rewatching the sequel trilogy beforehand reveals some harsh realities about her story. There's no denying that the sequel trilogy was exceptionally well-made and rejuvenated mainstream interest in the Star Wars franchise, leading to an era of new movies and TV shows that fans could only have dreamed of in previous years. That said, it's also clear that the sequels have several problems, including how Rey's character was handled.
9 Rey & Kylo Ren Were Held Back By The Luke/Vader Mold Despite some parallels between them, Rey and Luke were two very different characters, yet she and Kylo Ren were forced to fit the Luke/Vader mold from the original trilogy. Instead of structuring the plot around the unique aspects of Rey and Kylo's characters, Star Wars: The Force Awakens followed the same general structure as A New Hope, leading to a lot of familiar scenes that didn't work as well the second time around.
This makes it especially strange that Rey defeated Kylo Ren by using aggression and that the movie portrayed it as a good thing. Rey closed her eyes and felt the Force, just as Maz Kanata told her to, and it appeared that she would fight with calm focus while Kylo Ren was blinded by rage. However, Rey became just as angry and aggressive, and triumphant music played after she bested him.
