The incident occurred along Furnace Hill Road in Dunbar Township, Fayette County, at about 3:30 p.m.
According to state police, Brenda Dewitt, 56, was traveling west when she attempted to pass the vehicle in front of her. She did not get back into her lane in time and struck a Connellsville Area School District van traveling east head-on. Dewitt was pronounced dead at the scene. The van’s driver, Richard Watson, 73, and one of the students were flown by helicopter to local hospitals. The other two students were driven to a hospital for evaluation. The Connellsville district superintendent said all of the students were of elementary school age.State police said they believe alcohol and speed were factors in the accident, according to reports.
